Canebrake Horse Camp in North Carolina

Canebrake Horse Camp is located in the Badin Lake Recreation Area, a popular outdoor activity center in the Uwharrie National Forest of central North Carolina. The facility offers both single and double campsites along with many amenities designed specifically for equestrian camping but is not limited to those with horses. Horseback riding trails and hiking trails, off-road vehicle riding opportunities, mountain biking, swimming, fishing, and boating opportunities await campers along nearly 40 miles of forested horseback riding trails. It is open throughout the year.

There are 28 sites at Canebrake Horse Camp that have parking spurs for horse trailers. There are four double campsites among these sites. There are picnic tables, grills, fire rings, lantern posts, tie posts, tack tables, and electrical hookups at each site. Each site is permitted to accommodate up to two vehicles. Additionally, the camp provides drinking water spigots, hot showers, and flush toilets. The sites are equipped with electric hookups but do not have water or sewer hookups. There are sewage dump stations and horse washing stations in the vicinity.

The Equestrian Trail System is accessible from Canebrake via the Home Trail, which runs along the perimeter of the campground. About 40 miles of horse trails are available, ranging in difficulty from easy to difficult.

Horse campers will find a number of conveniences at this campground including a horse washing station, hitching racks, tack tables, parking spurs for horse trailers, and direct access to trails. The campsites are arranged around two loops. There are miles of forested paths that wind through forests, over hills, and across streams in the equestrian trail system. There are also a number of ways to enjoy the lake in the recreation area. In the afternoon, campers may enjoy swimming, boating, or fishing for bass, bream, crappie, and catfish. The surrounding national forest offers hunting and hiking opportunities, and off-road vehicle enthusiasts have access to 17 miles of trails.

From Troy, travel on NC 109N for 10 miles and turn left onto Mullinix Road (NC 1154). Follow Mullinix Road for about 2 miles to a "T" intersection. Turn right at "T" onto FR 544 (McLean Creek Road) and travel an about one-quarter mile to the campground on the right.
