Nestled in the heart of cattle country, just 45 minutes west of Fort Worth, lies an idyllic retreat known as Lake Mineral Wells State Park & Trailway. It is a slice of heaven for outdoor enthusiasts, with a rich tapestry of history, natural beauty, and a plethora of activities that cater to all kinds of interests. But one of the park's special features, particularly for equine aficionados, is the Cross Timbers Campground, a true sanctuary for horse camping.

A Dive into History and Scenic Beauty

The State Park sits near what was once a bustling health resort, thereby imbibing a touch of nostalgia. Visitors will be captivated by the stunning scenery the park has to offer – the sparkling lake, a challenging rock climbing area, and miles of trails that disappear into the horizon. It’s not just the landscape that's appealing, it's the stories that it tells.

Equine Adventures and More

As part of its comprehensive outdoor offerings, Lake Mineral Wells State Park & Trailway provides plenty of activities on land and on the water. Horse riding is particularly popular, with the park allowing visitors to bring their own horses. You can venture out on the 12.8 miles of park trails that range from leisurely lakeside rides to more challenging trails amidst the Cross Timbers.

For a longer journey, saddle up and explore the 20-mile Trailway. It is beautifully constructed, with flat grades and gentle curves, making it an enjoyable ride for both novices and experienced riders. Horseback riders share these trails with hikers and bikers, adding to the sense of community. However, note that the trails may close during wet weather for safety.

After a day full of adventures, retire to one of the 20 dedicated equestrian campsites available. These campsites offer a chance to connect with nature, under the Texas stars, with your equine companion by your side.

Water Activities and Gathering Spaces

If you prefer to cool down after a day's ride, plunge into the lake for a swim (no lifeguards on duty), fish for dinner, or rent a boat for some tranquility on the water. For those looking to organize a larger gathering or event, the park offers an amphitheater and a group hall for rent.
