Nehalem Bay State Park Horse Campsite in Oregon | Top Horse Trails

Perched on a 4-mile sand spit wedged between the shimmering ocean and tranquil bay, Nehalem Bay State Park in Oregon is a verdant oasis of outdoor recreation and unparalleled beauty. This majestic state park boasts a picturesque campground nestled among shore pines, just a short walk over a sand dune to the pristine beach. This unique location, complemented by a myriad of activities, makes it a favorite among locals and visitors alike, especially for equestrians seeking a memorable camping experience.

An Equestrian Retreat

One of the highlights of Nehalem Bay State Park is its well-equipped horse camp, a must-visit destination for horse lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Open year-round, the horse camp boasts 17 individual sites dedicated to guests traveling with saddle animals. Each campsite is thoughtfully designed with a spacious tent area and a vehicle parking space.

To accommodate the needs of equestrian guests, each site includes sturdy corrals providing secure, comfortable accommodations for the horses. Sites 3, 5, 15, and 17 offer larger corrals with four separate stalls, catering to bigger groups or guests with multiple horses. Although individual sites do not have private standpipes, drinking water for both humans and horses is readily available at multiple points in the camp area, ensuring the comfort and well-being of all visitors.

During the summer months, a horse concession is available at the ocean-side day-use area, further enhancing the equestrian experience. Additionally, the park maintains an efficient reservation system, allowing guests to book their stay up to 6 months in advance. Loops A, B, C, D, and the Horse Camps are available for reservation all year round. For those who prefer more spontaneous trips, the E and F loops operate on a first-come, first-served basis from November 1 through April 30.

Unparalleled Outdoor Recreation

Beyond its renowned equestrian facilities, Nehalem Bay State Park offers a plethora of recreational opportunities. A forested 1.8-mile-long bike path traverses the park, offering breathtaking views of the bay. As you meander through this serene route, you might spot deer and elk grazing lazily or a multitude of birds flitting through the trees.

The park's location is a water-lovers paradise. Kayaking, crabbing, fishing, and clamming are among the popular activities visitors can enjoy. Two well-appointed day-use areas offer easy access to the bay or the ocean. These areas come equipped with restrooms, picnic spots, and fire rings, inviting guests to spend the day exploring the water and enjoying a meal al fresco. The bayside day-use area even includes a boat ramp, adding another layer of convenience for visitors with boats. Please note that the boat docks are seasonal, typically operating from mid-May to mid-October, so it's wise to check with the park before planning your boat-based adventures.
