The campground is designed specifically for horse lovers, with numerous amenities to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. There are tents, trailers, and RV campsites - all with picnic tables and fire rings, and a shower house is available. Trained horses are allowed within the campground, and there are corrals and watering areas for them.

Even if you don't have your own horse, Roundup Horse Campground can still be a great place to stay. The campground offers horse rentals and guided tours for those who want to explore the park on horseback. These guided tours are led by experienced wranglers who know the park inside and out and can offer insights and stories about the area that you won't hear anywhere else.

Direction:

The South Unit entrance is in Medora, ND. Medora is accessible via Interstate 94 Exits 24 and 27 in North Dakota. Note Exit 27 is a westbound exit only. Medora is 133 miles west of Bismarck, ND, and 27 miles east of the Montana state line.

Nearby Attractions

The town of Medora has shopping, restaurants, and amenities and the Medora Musical is located approximately 12 miles to the south. The Little Missouri National Grasslands is the largest National Grassland in the nation at 1.03 million acres. It is located in western North Dakota and is managed by the Medora Ranger District in Dickinson, ND, and the McKenzie Ranger District in Watford City, ND. The National Grassland provides additional recreation opportunities in the area.

 

Policies:

  • Reservations may be made starting the first business day in March at 8:00 AM MT.
  • During hot and dry summer months, fire restrictions are common and campfires (including charcoal fires) may be prohibited.
  • During the busy season of May 1 through October 31, campers may stay a maximum of 5 night total in Roundup Horse Campground.
  • Water may not be available in May and October, weather dependent.
  • Generators' hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Generators must have an effective muffler.
  • A separate park entrance fee of $30 per vehicle is required; pass is valid for seven days; interagency passes are accepted.
  • Gathering firewood is allowed only in the campground. Firewood is available for purchase in surrounding communities.
  • Vehicles taller than 13 ft.: Trees in the campground may not be trimmed to accommodate vehicles of this size. Camping equipment may experience significant damage for which the NPS is not responsible.
  • There are no shower or laundry facilities located in the park.
  • No discounts apply with passes.
