The sole horse camp in the Wild Rivers Ranger District, Sam Brown Horse Camp offers a unique gateway to the breathtaking biodiversity of the area. Nestled amidst the awe-inspiring beauty of Briggs Valley, this campground is a mere 29 miles west of Grants Pass, perfectly poised between steep ridges that epitomize the natural charm of the Illinois Valley.

Campground Facilities

Sam Brown Horse Camp beckons with its seven well-equipped sites featuring horse corrals, ensuring a comfortable and secure stay for riders and their steeds. Embracing the essence of rustic camping, amenities include a vault toilet, potable water sourced from a reliable hand pump, picnic tables, and fire pits. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the local chapter of Back Country Horsemen of Oregon, recent upgrades have enhanced the camping facilities, elevating the overall camping experience.

Adventurous Trails Await

Embark on a thrilling journey along the Taylor Creek Trail, spanning an impressive 10.25 miles one way. This scenic route traverses from the Briggs Valley towards Merlin, leading riders through a captivating path to Lone Tree Pass. For the adventurous souls, the trail extends beyond the pass, revealing a steep valley etched by the graceful flow of Taylor Creek. With a moderate trail difficulty and an elevation of 2,000 feet, riders can relish over 40 miles of exhilarating horseback riding experiences in the vicinity.

Facilities to Delight Campers

Sam Brown Horse Camp ensures a delightful stay by offering various amenities and facilities. A large fire ring at the center of the campground fosters communal gatherings, creating opportunities for shared experiences and camaraderie among campers. Additionally, a training corral situated above the campground provides an ideal space for skill development and equine training sessions. Each campsite grants access to horse corrals, along with designated areas for hobbling or high-lining, ensuring the safety and comfort of the horses.

Directions:

From Interstate 5, take Merlin Exit to Merlin / Galice Road approximately 12 miles to Briggs Valley Road (Forest Road 2500). Follow Forest Road 2500 approximately 15 miles to Forest Road 2512, turn right and the campground will be on the right just past Briggs Creek bridge.

 

Sam Brown Horse Camp offers the following facilities and amenities:

  • 5 campsites with picnic tables, and fire pits
  • 2 double campsites with picnic tables, and fire pits
  • Horse corrals
  • Areas for hobbling or high-lining
  • Equestrian trails
  • Vault toilet

 

Cost Details:

  • $15 for campsite
  • $5 for an extra vehicle

 

Policies:

  • Quiet hours between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Campfires in developed fire pits only
  • Fireworks are prohibited
  • Dogs must be on a leash
  • OHV/ATV use is prohibited in the campground
  • Maximum length of stay: 14 days

  • No water is available.  Please bring your own water.
  • No garbage disposal - Please pack it out
