The 2,000-acre Schnell Ranch Recreation Area in North Dakota holds a rich history as a former working cattle ranch owned and operated by the Schnell family for 80 years. In 1993, this picturesque land became public property, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Bureau of Land Management, the Conservation Fund, the Richard King Mellon Foundation, and the Schnell family.

A Diverse Wildlife Habitat

The area's native mixed-grass prairie, hardwood draws, and former pasture lands provide a diverse range of habitats for wildlife. Visitors to Schnell Ranch Recreation Area may be treated to sightings of ducks, ring-necked pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse, Hungarian or grey partridges, white-tailed and mule deer, turkeys, rabbits, squirrels, porcupines, and neotropical migratory birds such as bluebirds, warblers, and flickers.
