The Babcock Ranch Preserve is a protected area of over 74,000 acres in Lee and Charlotte counties, Florida. It was purchased by the state of Florida in 2006 for conservation and recreation. The ranch is home to a number of endangered species, including the Florida panther, the red-cockaded woodpecker, the eastern indigo snake, and the gopher tortoise. The ranch also features a variety of recreational activities including biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing. The preserve is managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Southwest Florida Water Management District.
